The European Broadcasting Union EBU is looking for a On-call News Producer.Considering the nature of the position and the contract, preference will be given to candidates who are already eligible to work in Geneva (Swiss nationals or work permit holders)ABOUT THE EUROVISION NEWS DEPARTMENTEurovision News is a premier distributor of quality news content, a provider of news-related broadcast services and an advocate for public service journalism. Its primary goal is to serve the needs of the EBU members according to its editorial standards and principles.The Eurovision News Exchange, Radio Exchange, and Sports Exchange offer access to selected live and edited material from EBU Members and unlimited number of content partners 24/7.The EUROVISION News Exchange (EVN), in operation since 1961, is the biggest exchange of its kind. It is built upon a network of 62 EBU Member newsrooms in over 50 countries and is founded on principles of editorial integrity, solidarity, and sharing of knowledge and best practices.Live and edited news content is delivered continuously to EBU Members and News Exchange sub- licensees over three permanent satellite channels on the EUROVISION network. The edited material is delivered by file.PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITIONWorking within an international team of News Producers and Sub-Editors, led by News Editor, the news producer handles the content and delivery of the news exchange and is responsible for implementing the News Editors' decisions.The On-call News Producer :
  • Ensures that active participants in the news exchange system receive the content they require and get the best value out of the news exchange.
  • May on occasion be assigned to special events field operations or other newsroom /EBU projects occasionally.
News Coordination :
  • Edits video and audio, working autonomously or under the direction of News Editor.
  • Operates video servers and technical equipment as well as IT systems and databases.
  • Edits, corrects and supplements written texts provided by Members and third parties.
  • Can perform various roles on the news desk: day, overnight and week-ends producer, subeditor, digital producer.
  • Consistently ensures that the most appropriate and up-to-date visual images and information are available for programmes and services.
  • Produces and manages complex stories ensuring essential elements of the news are captured and distributed.
  • Provides the News Producers, the EVC, Members, users and contributors with all necessary information (satellite details, schedules, restrictions, synopsis… for the News) and in accordance with the EVN rules.
  • Delivers quality, well produced items for use by all programmes and services.
  • Occasionally responsible for creation of EBU own content at major events.
  • Understands the technical and digital changes in the broadcast world and is able to adjust to them.
Members :
  • Is in constant contact with Members and other sources of news material.
  • Centralises specific requests and does the necessary research to fulfil them.
  • Is aware of and follows up upon the News Exchange strategic directions.
  • Promotes the image and core values of the EBU.
  • Checks on a regular basis members interest in and use of specific items.
  • Promotes new ideas and projects to EBU Members.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCESThe successful candidate :
  • At least 3 years of experience in a newsroom
  • Possess excellent journalistic skills and an interest and passion for news - especially global news, be prepared to embrace new technologies and work flexible hours including regular patterns of overnights.
  • Has excellent news judgment and maintains a strong knowledge of local, national and international news through social media, wire services, TV and radio platforms and other sources.
  • Has knowledge of social media and basic skills in digital newsgathering.
  • Journalistic experience in creating and editing stories
  • Strong news judgement and knowledge of major news stories and developments globally
  • Knowledge of social media tools such as X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram; digitally savvy
  • Understanding of copyright regulations
  • Good understanding of broadcasting news technology and video editing (IT, production facilities and network systems)
  • Understanding and implementation of journalistic principles such as impartiality and fairness in reporting and ethics
