Main purposeThe Quantitative Gas Analyst will sit at the intersection of trading, data science, and market research, providing rigorous quantitative analysis to support gas trading decisions. The role involves building and maintaining pricing models, developing analytical tools, and generating actionable insights from large and complex datasets. The successful candidate will work closely with traders, risk managers, and commercial teams to enhance the analytical framework underpinning Trafigura's gas trading activities.Key responsibilitiesModelling & AnalyticsDevelop, maintain, and improve quantitative models for natural gas and LNG pricing, spread analysis, and market dynamics.Build and enhance fundamental supply/demand models for key gas markets (Europe, Asia, Americas).Construct statistical and econometric models to identify trading signals and market inefficiencies.Develop tools for scenario analysis, sensitivity testing, and stress testing of gas positions.Market Research & IntelligenceMonitor and analyse global gas and LNG market developments, including supply/demand balances, storage levels, weather impacts, and geopolitical factors.Produce regular market reports and ad hoc analysis for traders and senior management.Track and interpret macroeconomic and energy policy developments relevant to gas markets.Data & SystemsSource, clean, and manage large datasets from internal and external data providers (e.g., Platts, ICIS, Bloomberg, EIA, GIE).Automate data pipelines and reporting workflows using Python, SQL, or similar tools.Collaborate with technology teams to integrate analytical outputs into trading systems and dashboards/Collaboration & CommunicationWork closely with gas traders to understand commercial needs and translate them into quantitative frameworks.Present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholdersSupport the risk management team with exposure analysis and mark-to-market reporting.Required qualificationsBachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline — Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, or Computer Science2–5 years of experience in a quantitative or analytical role within energy markets, commodities, or financial servicesStrong proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) and/or R for data analysis and modellingSolid understanding of natural gas or LNG market fundamentalsExperience with statistical modelling, time series analysis, and regression techniquesProficiency in SQL and working with large datasetsStrong communication skills — ability to present complex analysis clearly and conciselyPreferred qualificationsExperience with machine learning techniques applied to energy or commodity marketsFamiliarity with gas trading instruments (physical, futures, options, swaps)Knowledge of European or Asian gas market structures and pricing benchmarks (TTF, NBP, JKM, Henry Hub)Experience with Bloomberg, Platts, or ICIS data platformsExposure to risk management frameworks (VaR, Greeks, scenario analysis)Attributes for successAnalytical rigour and attention to detailCommercial awareness and curiosity about energy marketsAbility to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced trading environmentCollaborative mindset with strong stakeholder management skillsProactive, self-motivated, and intellectually curiousDepartment overviewThe Analysis team at Trafigura provides independent, data-driven research and quantitative insight to support trading and commercial decision-making across the business.
