K-Lab at EPFL invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on technology transfer and experimental development of traveling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) for quantum computing applications. Quantum-limited microwave amplifiers, which add minimal noise, are key instruments in quantum computing, radio astronomy, and particle physics. Yet, these remain largely inaccessible.Within the framework of a funded tech transfer project by the ERC, we are looking for a postdoctoral scholar with industrial and academic experience to work on the industrialization of a novel superconducting integrated circuit technology for use in the domain of superconducting circuits and quantum computing, with the ultimate aim of launching a spin-off. Commercializing quantum-limited amplifiers, such as traveling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs), would accelerate research globally.We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher to help bridge the gap between our state-of-the-art research in superconducting quantum devices and their commercialization. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of quantum engineering, device physics, and industry engagement, contributing to the maturation and deployment of TWPA technology.Main duties and responsibilities
  • Design, fabricate, and experimentally characterize superconducting TWPAs
  • Optimize device performance (gain, bandwidth, noise) for integration in quantum computing platforms
  • Work in the cleanroom to fabricate devices
  • Simulate the performance in key software (AWR, etc.)
  • Document results in internal reports, patent applications, and scientific publications
  • Provide technical support and guidance for transitioning the technology to commercial viability
  • Packaging of the devices using PCB, etc
Profile
  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field
  • Strong background in superconducting devices, microwave engineering, or quantum information
  • Hands-on experience with low-temperature measurements (dilution refrigerators), RF design, and/or nanofabrication techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments
  • Interest or experience in technology commercialization or industrial partnerships is a strong plus
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Very good level of spoken and written English

About K-LabThe K-Lab at EPFL, led by Prof. Tobias J. Kippenberg, focuses on Quantum Measurements and Photonics and is active in multiple domains, including superconducting circuit optomechanics, and next generation integrated photonic circuits. It has also developed state of the art superconducting quantum devices, including Josephson junction based TWPA.
